This has been a question asked many times during our unit on moon phases. Why? Why? Simply the reason is: A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon enters the Earth's shadow. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's shadow falls on the Earth. They do not happen every month because the Earth's orbit around the sun is not in the same plane as the Moon's orbit around the Earth. If you were to draw a little Earth in orbit around a little sun on a piece of paper, then you would not be able to accurately draw the Moon's orbit on that same piece of paper. Sometimes the Moon will be above the paper, other times below it. Only when the Moon is crossing the plane of the Earth's orbit (the paper) just as it is lining up with the Earth and Sun will an eclipse occur. These two diagrams show how the moon isn't linked to the Earth in the same orbit as the Earth. Their paths are different. The above map shows you where every Solar Eclipse will take place until 2050. The parts of the Earth that are not in the shadow of the moon will never see a Solar Eclipse. They would have to fly or drive to be in the path of the shadow. This is why scientists call Solar Eclipses "rare". They happen, but only certain places and times on the Earth. Until 2020 this is what we can expect from Solar Eclipses. This map shows where the Lunar Eclipse will happen on January 31, 2018. Can you find Utah? Yes! We are in the path of totality! Oh Yeah! And you know how a lunar eclipse works...right...ummm, you should...you built a sweet model!

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
