We know prokaryotes (bacteria) are super simple. Single cell, DNA floats in the middle and there is pili or a flagella to use for movement and sticking to a surface. Fungi on the other hand is a Eukaryote and is multi-cellular! They are complex organisms with mycelium, fruiting bodies, spores and a bunch of other stuff you probably have forgotten... Scientists classify fungus in three basic groups: Yeast: single cell fungi. Mold: Multicellular Mushrooms: Multicellular, has a stem, cap and gills. Let's start with yeast 1. Bakers or brewers yeast Bakers yeast starts to grow when the temperature is warm. As they bud and feast on sugar in the bread dough, they create gas. This is what makes the bread rise...lots of yeast gas. 2. Probiotic yeast A part of normal intestinal flora; available in pharmacies as a probiotic, which can prevent diarrhea when taking antibiotics. (Antibiotics kill bad bacteria and good fungus/bacteria in your gut). 3. Skin flora (flora...a nice way to say fungus. It's kind of pretty) Sometimes skin flora turns nasty and you might develop or pick up from someone else their bad flora which is called ringworm. 3. Candida natural yeasts that grow in your mouth and other moist places.... if this yeast gets out of hand it can be painful and gross. There is not a pretty picture of this at all, I can look...this photo below shows how candida can grow quickly in your mouth, tongue, and other moist places... On to the Molds! Penicillin 1. Aspergillus commonly contaminates starchy foods, corn (maize) and peanuts. 2. Rhizopus molds appear on old bread, decaying fruit and vegetables. 3. Mucor causes a rare mucormycosis. (Brain fungal growth) 4. Last but not least: Mildew....ew! And now MUSHROOMS Fungi! Neither plant or animal!
