Why Is the Timing of the Seasons Opposite in the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere?9/29/2015 Science Period 1 and 2 explored how the Earth rotates on its axis. The axis pointing to the North Star. Their posters are becoming more accurate by the day. Science Period 3 completed their lab "Why Is it Hotter at the Equator than at the Poles" lab. Reports were turned in this afternoon. Students that didn't finish need to complete the lab tonight and turn it in at the beginning of Period 3 tomorrow. In Australia, are the winter months the same as the winter months in the Northern Hemisphere? In other words, up here we say "I'll be glad when summer gets here and the weather warms up." Do they, on the other hand say "I'll be glad when winter is here and the weather warms up." Do they call our winter, winter? Or do they call it summer? Actually, the names for the hot season (summer) and cold season (winter) apply the same way in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Our northern winter is in Dec, Jan and Feb, whereas the southern winter is in June, July, and August. Each of our summers is 6 months away from our winters in our respective hemispheres. In cold places in either hemisphere people might say: "I'll be glad when summer gets here and the weather warms up". The difference is that in the North people might say "I am dreading a cold January" whereas in the South you might say "I am looking forward to a warm January". This diagram shows how the Earth is tilted for each hemisphere. Check out the shadows in this model and how they compare to the tiny man on the Earth. Can you see the tilt? Yeah, its pretty much all about the tilt and the angle of the Sun's rays. We can see the tilt really well in this diagram. To understand the Seasons you have to have a good picture in your mind of what is really going on. Social StudiesIn Mr. Scheerer's class we finished up our hieroglyphic packet and have had a good time practicing writing symbols of our own.
In Mrs. Taylor's class we have finished up learning about the Nile River and have a good idea of how long the Egyptians were a powerful civilization. (About 1, 900 years!) That is a LONG time. We will start our unit on hieroglyphics tomorrow.

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
