Want to see what you weigh on other worlds? If you have a moment go here: https://www.exploratorium.edu/ronh/weight/ You can put your weight into a "calculator" and discover quickly what you would weigh anywhere in our Solar System...and beyond. Our mass stays the same where ever we go in the universe, but its our weight that will be different as we encounter large, medium or smaller celestial objects. Gravitational forces are responsible for the changes in your "weight". Well, if you live on Earth for your entire life, then what you eat is a large factor determining your weight...since most of us aren't astronauts we don't experience what it would be like to be "weightless" very often...if at all. Our mass increases as we eat more and grow into our bodies. Our weight is our attraction to the Earth, it's the numbers we see on our scale that is on the Earth. Personally I would love to visit another planet and be "weightless" for a time. Ironically, because we would be "weightless" for a long period of time, our mass would decrease because we aren't using our muscles. These tissues when not used would decrease in size and we would be kind of like blobs in space.... Where in the universe do you weigh the most? Where in the world do you weigh the least? Since Mercury is the smallest planet in the Solar System, would you predict that you would weigh the least? Check it out... If you want to weigh the least we would need to go to Mars. It’s quite easy to think that you would weigh the least on Mercury but given that it’s more dense than the Red Planet, the gravity is stronger there making you weigh more. Between Mars and Mercury, the difference in your weight would be quite small. For instance, if you weighed 154 pounds on Earth, then you would weigh around 58.2 pounds on Mars and 58.3 pounds on Mercury. As the planets get more massive, the more you will weigh. Does it really matter what we weigh on different planets? Nope. BUT, it's fun to think about what you could do if there was less gravity around. One more!

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
