The cycling of water is key to our survival. When we study water in the biosphere we are looking at how water cycles from the bottom of the oceans to three miles above sea level. Life exists between these two boundaries and water is the bloodstream that supplies all these living things so they can continue to live. Plants absorb water from the soil.... Extra water goes out of the plants (transpiration) and enters the atmosphere. Transpiration in the forest can create enough moisture for plants and animals that live in the highest canopies and on the forest floor. Humans and most animals are mostly made of water and need water to keep their organs working. We are 70% water! Everything that leaks out of us (sweat, urine, vapor from our breath), all of it has to be replaced. Water is an important chemical process of photosynthesis. The above enzyme equation shows that 6 molecules of water are needed to make 12 molecules of water to make energy for plants. Water also captures nutrients and holds them in our bodies until we need them and it transports these nutrients to places in our bodies that needs them. All living things need water, from tiny bacteria to large sperm whales. Everybody who is somebody has to have it.

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
