I love the word "kinetic", it kind of clicks off your tongue in a pleasing way...also it brings to mind many satisfying movies of "kinetic stuff". Sigh...Kinetic sand is the best! Anyway, back to the word "kinetic", what does it mean exactly? Kinetic means something is being led to motion. It could be atoms, molecules or even sand. The Kinetic Theory of Matter is about getting matter to change if energy is put into it. Like solids, they don't have enough "kinetic energy" to move apart from each other so they remain jiggling in a very packed situation. Water has more "kinetic energy" because the molecules have the ability to slide past each other. And gas, it has much more "kinetic energy" so these molecules can fly past each other at great distances! These three bottles of soda show all the phases of matter; solid, liquid and a gas. The bottles are made of a solid (glass), the liquid inside can freely flow out of the bottle, and the gases can freely move out of the bottle. Particles of matter are constantly in motion. If we look more closely at matter we can see this is true. The differences in matter has everything to do with movement, or "kinetic energy". Kids experience periods of slow kinetic energy and periods of high kinetic energy.... Totally kinetic....

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
