"Why do we have to write a lab report?", can be heard echoing the hallways after Science class. Well, why do we have to write a lab report? Why couldn't we just do the lab, have fun and then take a test? What? Oh...no test, just do the lab and have fun... Here's the deal: 1. A lab report establishes the purpose of the lab. Sometimes the lab can be so time consuming and complicated that some students might forget what in the world we are studying! 2. Labs help students analyze a scientific concept. Some phenomenon need a closer look, a test, a time to think, "My teacher told me this would happen...will it happen? I want to see it happen." 3. Lab reports help students write like actual scientists really do. The lab report format is important to organize and communicate what the lab was about and what the student learned. 4. A lab report is a document that shows what students have learned. For the teacher, a lab report shows what the student understands or doesn't understand. If most of the lab reports are poorly written, the teacher can assume the scientific lesson has not been learned, or understood. It may mean the class needs to go back to the drawing board and try the concept again. A good lab report is more than a document that shows data, the report shows an understanding of observations and the students ability to see differences between the hypothesis and the conclusion. Basically, you get it! Exactly...that's why we are learning how to write lab reports...
