Which is better? Should we follow a food chain which is a straight line from producer to carnivore? Or study a food web, which includes many pathways from producer to consumer? A Food Web displays more of the interactions that take place within the ecosystem and therefore would be a better representation. A food web is a realistic, true to life representation. I know! The food web looks much more complicated... and it is, but it really is better to understand the whole picture of things...in an ecosystem. The Food Web shows more of the interactions between the organisms of the ecosystem and the trophic levels from Producers to Primary/Secondary Consumers up through the Tertiary Consumers. The food chain only tells part of the story....I figure you would like to know the whole story, not just part of it? Think of it this way...a food web is a bunch of food chains grouped all together...in a web. Kind of like a puzzle, if you put all the chain parts together then your understanding of the ecosystem "web" is so much better. And, that's pretty much the difference between a food chain and a food web. See? That's not so hard to contemplate? Don't worry, you'll get it. The really hard webs come later. Really! Were only in the 6th grade!

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
