When is the last time you paid attention to your surroundings? Like, really looked at your surroundings? I mean REALLY look at your surroundings! YES! That's exactly what I mean! We are usually so busy with music lessons, math homework, sports practices, video games, texting, youtubing....that we haven't really looked at where we live very closely...at all. Let's start with your Biome...do you know what your Biome is? A biome is a geographical area that is very large in size. Each of these geographical areas has certain groups of animals and plants that are present within it. They are able to thrive there due to their ability to adapt in that particular type of environment Did you spot yours?? Biomes are really interesting and so diverse. The plants, insects and animals in your neighborhood might thrive near your house, but move them up to the top of a mountain, or closer to Utah Lake, and they might die. We live in a desert. 20% of the Earth is made up of deserts. The characteristics for this biome is "little rain". In Utah we get most of our moisture during the winter when it snows. The water in the snow is stored until spring when we need to use the water for watering and farming. Convenient, but dry... The driest place on Earth is the Antarctic Desert, yet this desert holds in reserve about 90% of all the Earth's fresh water. It's just frozen solid! Do you have a favorite Biome? All of us have a favorite place, from the very largest organism to the smallest, everything has a home.
