Wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have to worry about learning "symbols" on weather maps? Why couldn't they be simple and cute? SIGH! Instead we need to worry about learning these kinds of symbols: Cloud symbols...take a look at the altocumulus double-layer symbol...it looks like snazzy glasses, or how about altocumulus of chaotic sky! It looks like a big nose and a smile, hardly chaotic! These wind symbols are cool...except I don't know what a knot is, except for the one in my shoelace... Look at these "sky" symbols...the clear sky looks like a beachball, and then the beach ball gets kind of weird and the different colored quarters are called "oktas". I wonder how bad the sky looks for "eight oktas"? Who took the simple out of weather forecasting? Weather forecasting is a prediction of what the weather will be like in an hour, tomorrow, or next week. Weather forecasting involves a combination of computer models, observations, and a knowledge of trends and patterns. By using these methods, reasonable accurate forecasts can be made up to seven days in advance. Above is a gif of a storm that took place last year on Oct. 30, 2017. It turned out to be a major storm and this data predicted things would get messy for the East Coast. Can you find the cold fronts? How about spotting the large Occluded Front? This big storm did as was predicted in the weather model. Too bad all weather can't be controlled...it would be so much easier! Or would it.... I'll just wish you will have patience as you learn how to read weather, and have fun predicting weather with the weather forecasters. It's a challenge, but do-able.
