Does anyone remember Mood Rings? Everyone wanted one when I was a kid. I can remember raking leaves three Saturdays in a row to earn money to buy my own Mood Ring! I wore my Mood Ring with pride! My friends had rings that turned orange, red, green and blue. My ring was mostly blue, all the time, and my favorite color is pink...I began to contemplate, during school hours, probably during Math, why didn't my Mood Ring make pretty colors like everyone else? Mood Rings change colors with the changing temperature of your skin. I was always cold...so my Mood Ring was always blue! How could I change the temperature of my skin?? The Mood Charts said Blue mean't you were either angry or in the mood for romance! Yick! I was only 10 years old for heavens sake! I just wanted a little heat to warm my hands. The first factor to consider when you want to change the temperature of something is to figure out how much heat you need. I wanted heat fast, quickly I thought, I could build a fire and warm my hands by it. Fire at school was prohibited. I could bring a candle, hold a steaming hot cup of cocoa, the ideas flowed out of my brain! Finally my best friend suggested, why don't you rub your hands together really fast for a few seconds? Brilliant idea! I began to furiously rub my hands together. The second factor to consider is the size of the object you want to heat up. My hands weren't that big, so I figured just a little bit of rubbing should turn my Mood Ring pink in no time at all! After a minute my ring turned a lighter shade of blue, and I felt like I was going to get blisters on my palms from all the rubbing. I had to think quick! Maybe clapping would heat more of my skin? I did have skin all over and around the ring... My hands were really starting to heat up and a lot of my friends were happy to clap along with me too. The experiment was becoming contagious! The third factor for raising the temperature of an object is to consider what the object is made of! My stinging, burning hands were made of skin, bones, veins, blood, tendons, hard nails...I looked at my Mood Ring, the color was turning, it was starting to turn green! Yes! All this friction, slapping and movement was making my hands warm right up! My best friend leaned toward me and whispered. She was looking at her watch, the bell was about to ring and recess would be over. I was only at green, I had to reach pink! She whispered louder, "you don't want to be green..." "Why?" I nearly screamed at her my hands hurt so bad! "Green means you are grumpy, that you're troubled and nervous, jealous of others." Horrified I jammed my steaming hands into my pockets! Stupid ring! This was not the results I wanted! These mood rings are fake! Who would create such a phenomenon and make such a big deal over moods? Who would fall for such trickery? There was only one thing to do... If I want to raise the temperature of some object I will remember the 3 factors. And never get suckered into buying a worthless object again!
