Stratus clouds are rather gray, dull and spread out across the sky like a sheet or blanket. Stratus means "sheet", so the name does describe the clouds. Stratus clouds are thick and can be layered making the sky dark and gray. Many people get depressed by stratus clouds because they are "boring" compared to the other cloud types and they usually bring drizzly rain that might last for hours or days. If the stratus clouds are thick sunlight doesn't penetrate through the layers and this makes for a dull, wet day. Are there other clouds that make sheets? Yes, cirrostratus, and stratocumulous. Remember, stratus means "sheets". Other cloud types can make sheets too. Stratocirrus clouds. Stratocumulous clouds. There we have it, the stratus clouds. This is probably the most boring post ever, but the topic is boring because it isn't exciting and not many people like boring! I mean how many people would just stand out in the rain and watch stratus clouds drizzle on them? Exactly!!
