Quick facts about Electrostatic Forces: 1. Can be attractive. 2. Can be repulsive. 3. Electrostatic forces can act in empty space. 4. Electrostatic force is stronger than gravity! Science Period's 1 and 2 have discovered that electrostatic forces can pick up paper, pull aluminum cans and pick up packing peanuts! Electrostatic forces can happen among metals too! Big metals! Electromagnetic forces occur when an electromagnetic field interacts with electrically charged particles, such as those that make up a plasma (ie. electrons, protons and other ions). It includes the electric force, which produces electric fields between charged forces, and the magnetic force, which manifests itself as magnetic fields wherever there are moving charges. Plasma's (super heated gases) interact strongly with electromagnetic forces, resulting in complex structures and motion that far exceeds that found in gases, liquids, and solids. This is can be seen in solar flares and the solar wind, which overcome the Sun's magnetic field, speeds away, and out into the space our planets are orbiting! The Sun's immense gravity is unable to hang onto the "solar wind" which streams away at about 400 km per second. Which leads back to the question: Could electrostatic forces be something that helped to create our Solar System? Science Period 3 is finishing their Spinning Lab Report and will be going outside to do the "Accretion Activity". Social StudiesMr. Scheerer's class is working on key terms and vocabulary that pertain to democracy in Athens. Mrs. Taylor's class just finished their Egypt Unit test and will be going on into Ancient Greece and the study and comparison of Greek Democracy with the U. S. Government. The Greek influence has been shared with the modern United States. Important government buildings look like some of the same structures as the structures in Ancient Greece. Ancient Greek building. Hmmm, that's kind of cool!

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
