We know that the Earth has seasons because of our 23.4-5 degree tilt. Weather is created due to the way our Earth tilts and how the Sun hits our surface, and at what type of angle. If you live near the equator, the seasons are hard to tell apart because the temperatures are warm most of the time. If you live at the poles, it's kind of the same, it's really cold and frozen...all the time. We live in the perfect place actually. We are right in the middle of everything and experience every season. Yeah, basketball season is pretty good too... Let's get back to the original idea: What would the Earth be like if we didn't have season's? If our Earth was tilted more than 23.5 degrees our season's would be more extreme! But if we didn't have a tilt, then our weather would be like Southern Florida 365 days out of the year. Living in temperature's that average between 50 to 85 degrees doesn't seem so bad, except food production might suffer. Wheat doesn't like to grow in those warmer temperatures. Corn has a hard time growing in that kind of climate as well. That means no wheat or corn products. Most people who study these kind of scenarios believe that humans would never be able to survive these kinds of conditions. Most of the continents are above or below the equator. Humans would need to live in small settlements and try to scratch out a living without many of the foods we enjoy. Maybe worst of all would be the diseases and insects that would over populate the world. Animals wouldn't need to hibernate and birds wouldn't need to migrate. Of course these situations are not real and can't be tested, only pondered and thought about. Having a tilted world is perfect for life on this planet. Humans, animals, insects and other creepy crawly critters are perfectly happy living through the seasons. I'll leave the pondering and wondering about a "no tilted" world to the science fiction writers...

When that 9.1 earthquake happened, did it only knock us off our axis at -0.1, does this mean we are now at a 25.4 axis?

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
