Scientists have discovered why unpleasant sounds make us cringe.. When we hear unpleasant sounds such as a fork scraping a plate or nails against a chalk board, the auditory (sound) cortex of the brain and an area of the brain called the amygdala (amig-doll-a) interact to produce a negative response. The auditory cortex processes sound, while the amygdala is responsible for making us feel emotions such as fear, anger, and pleasure. Here's the number one sound people hate: a knife scraping a bottle... Number 2: fork scraping a glass. Number 3: Chalk on a blackboard. Number 4: A ruler scraping on a bottle... Number 5: Fingernails scraping across a blackboard. Number 6: A female screaming...um, I've heard some pretty shrill men screams... Number 7: An anglegrinder.. Oh yeah, that gets on my nerves after awhile. Number 8: Breaks on a bicycle squealing. Number 9: A baby crying. Who does this remind you of? I'm thinking of someone..... Number 10: The Drill! So if you are annoyed by certain sounds now you can blame it on your amygdala. It's all in your head!
Now go eat a Popsicle and annoy someone just for fun...(hee hee hee!)
