Scientists are worried that our human population will out grow Earth's resources. They are afraid we are going to run out of fuel for our cars, minerals for our technology and then we will be stuck with a hugely populated world without food, water, or materials to sustain ALL of us. Don't worry! Be happy! NASA has us covered! They know and have told us that the cosmos has tons of resources floating around in space. Asteroids are a wonderful resource, they are large, made of metals and worth millions of dollars. Even a house sized asteroid could take care of a large population for a long time. Turns out there are three types of asteroids: there are dark carbon rich colored asteroids which contain water that is bound up in a clay type of rock. This type of rock would be essential for sustaining life on our planet as well as other planets. Another type of asteroid has hardly any water but contains loads of metals like iron, nickel and cobalt. The M-class of asteroids are rare but contain ten times more metal than all the others. These are the "golden nuggets" of space. All of this truly interesting information about mining asteroids can be found at: https://www.nasa.gov/content/goddard/new-nasa-mission-to-help-us-learn-how-to-mine-asteroids There are constraints to missions like this...once we get on the asteroid (which costs millions of dollars) the equipment needed to mine costs millions of dollars...so is this a good idea? Some would argue it is a "fantastic" idea. Many incomprehensible ideas are accomplished because people have ideas and they talk to lots of people who think those ideas are pretty good and pretty soon the idea snowballs and people want to try and make it happen so they provide support, like money and research. Instead of worrying about the future, people are actively thinking, working out and making our future a better place. It's when we quit thinking, planning, and give up on our future...that's when we should worry....
