The Autumn Equinox is the first day of fall. It is celebrated by many different cultures and plays a significant role in some beliefs. For most people, fall is a time that ushers in harvests, preserving food for the upcoming months, enjoyment of the colors of the changing leaves and beginning to prepare oneself both physically and psychologically for the upcoming colder months. This is the day when both the daytime and nighttime are of the same length, which has been long interpreted to mean that the world is in balance. Once the autumnal equinox passes, the nights begin to get longer and the temperatures will start to fall. How are you going to celebrate the Autumnal Equinox? I have a few ideas: Many people like to welcome in fall by remaining awake all night, to honor the equal length of day and night. Perhaps tie this in with a celebration with friends. At least stay up until midnight.... Decorate your yard with pumpkins and scarecrows. Make something pumpkin, like pumpkin soup, hot pumpkin chocolate drink, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin everything! How about making a fall craft? Carve some shrunken apple heads, make a pumpkin wreath with colored leaves. Harvest your pumpkin patch. Take a moment to make an inner harvest of your life, this refers to all the achievements and experiences that you have had or felt during the past few seasons. This is a way of restoring gratitude into your life, as you realize what you have done and how you have coped with challenges during the past months. Express your creativity and paint a picture or take a photo of this beautiful season. Meditate or do tai-chi. Try to find your balance, in the same way that the world finds its balance on the autumnal equinox. There are delicious foods from harvest to help you cleanse and keep to a healthy diet at this time of year, such as apples, grapes, peaches, plums, pears, watermelon, celery, squash, eggplants, tomatoes, zucchini, bell peppers and more. Healthy eating leads to a more balanced life. Okay, your celebration ideas are probably better than mine. Whatever you do, remember, science is awesome!

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
