Maybe you haven't heard about the Hoopla going on about gravitational waves? What are they and why is everyone getting so excited? Way back in 1916 Einstein predicted that very large objects when they exploded or collided with each other must make a wave in space. Just like a rock when you throw it in a pond, the ripples will move outward. This was part of Einsteins Law of Relativity. He believed space is like a fabric, it has mass and that mass is gravity. Back then instruments to measure gravity weren't that sensitive, until just this week our technology allowed us to see two neutron stars collide and feel the effects of that massive explosion as the ripples of space fabric hit the Earth. How big are these waves? The width of a "proton". Even Einstein wasn't sure if his theory of gravitational waves was correct. But during your lifetime, just this week you have experienced one of the finest scientific break through...gravitational waves are real. This means all of our Solar System, the entire Universe, all of infinite space is like an ocean. Space is made of matter that feels the effects of large objects. The Sun being the largest object in our solar system draws us toward it because, like a piece of fabric, it is heavier and the Earth and planets could "roll" toward it just like marbles on fabric. (Force of Gravity!!) Knowing about gravitational waves will help scientists and astronomers learn more about black holes and how giant explosions in space (supernovas) have an effect on galaxies, solar systems and more.
Pretty cool, huh? And we were able to experience this together!

Wow...and the bends of the fabric make it so things can fall toward the earth or sun, which is a theory of how we got the moon.Things are really starting to fit together!

WOW!!! THIS LOOKS SO COOL!!! The gravitational waves look so cool! I wonder what it would be like if we could see gravitational waves. We would be able to see germs and stuff like that though so maybe not... Today I'm going to change the blog to Jack-o-lanterns! Like I said only Ivy, Sammy, Ryley, and Elayna are probably the only people who know what I'm talking about. Love the pictures Mrs. Taylor!!! That first one really AMAZED me!!!

i really like the first picture, because it is two blue spheres colliding. doesn't things that take up space make like a dent like putting bowling ball on your bed it makes a dent in space, then you put a marble on the bed it also makes a dent.

OOOHHH MMMYYY GGGOOOSSSHH!!!! I cannot believe we were part of a major break through In space. GRAVITATIONAL WAVES !!! [ if I'm wrong, please correct me.] [ actually ,maybe don't or else I might punch you.] and if your in a bad mood, [ or if you just want to laugh.][ like I sometimes am.] here are some funny jokes.

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
