SIMILARITIES: 1. They both have DNA as their genetic material. 2. They are both membrane bound. 3. They both have ribosomes . 4. They have similar basic metabolism . 5. They are both amazingly unique in forms. Lets see if we can picture the similarities: Both have a cell membrane. Both have ribosomes. Eukaryotes have a few more, but they are bigger and need more ribosomes to read and transport DNA information. Eukaryotes need oxygen to survive. Prokaryotes (bacteria) can survive in oxygen or without oxygen. That makes them extreme organisms! DIFERENCES: 1. eukaryotes have a nucleus, while prokaryotes do not 2. eukaryotes have membrane-bound organelles, while prokaryotes do not. The organelles of eukaryotes allow them to exhibit much higher levels of intracellular division of labor than is possible in prokaryotic cells. 3. Eukaryotic cells are, on average, ten times the size of prokaryotic cells. 4. The DNA of eukaryotes is much more complex and therefore much more extnsive than the DNA of prokaryotes. 5. Prokaryotes have a cell wall composed of peptidoglycan, a single large polymer of amino acids and sugar . Many types of eukaryotic cells also have cell walls, but none made of peptidoglycan. 6. The DNA of prokaryotes floats freely around the cell; the DNA of eukaryotes is held within its nucleus and associated with histones (proteins) 7. Eukaryotes undergo mitosis; prokaryotes divide by binary fission (simple cell division) Can we see some of these differences? Let's see: 1. No nucleus in the prokaryote. 2. No membrane bound organelles in the prokaryote. 3. Prokaryotic cells are way smaller than eukaryotic cells. 4. Prokaryotic DNA process is much simpler than the eukaryote. 5. Bacteria have super complex cell walls. 6. Prokaryote DNA hangs out in the whole cell, eukaryotic DNA is packaged into the nucleus. 7. Prokaryote cell division is very simple. Eukaryotes...very complex. Simple right?

The diagram on binary fission was very helpful, we had read about it before, but i didn't really understand. So, basically cells are either Prokaryotic, or Eukaryotic?

Yes, there are only two types of cells...so you are either bacteria or eukaryote...which makes us?

Excellent Observation! If you aren't bacteria you are a eukaryote!

That's really cool. By the way the wet slides for the microscopes smell really bad if I haven't already said so.

were sorta like eukarotes because we both need oxygen.

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
