What is convection? Convection is when a liquid or gas is heated it will rise. When the liquid or gas cools it sinks creating a cycle or circular motion that moves. Some examples of convection: Convection can be found in a teapot heating up, a room trying to heat up, in the atmosphere and in the mantle of the Earth! This pattern can be applied to the sun as well. Granulations on photosphere or surface of the sun show convection. Scientists are pretty sure convection is the action taking place that makes the surface of the sun appear to "boil". Just like boiling water in a pot releases steam as it boils, on the photosphere, the granulations move as if boiling and release photons! This is how the light particles are ejected out of the sun! Convection makes sense when you think about it. Of course the sun is SO hot is it possible that gas so hot would cool down enough to sink and heat up again and rise? Heat from the interior of Jupiter causes convection patterns in the atmosphere, with warm gas rising and cooling, before sinking back into the depths of the planet. This process causes the different colored bands in Jupiter's atmosphere. The light colored bands, called "zones," are the rising areas, while the dark colored regions, or "belts," are the sinking gas. It is entirely possible that gases can convect on the sun.
Offer to make soup for dinner and watch for yourself how water boils and convects, maybe take a thermometer and hold it at the surface of the water and see how hot the water is at the surface compared to the bottom of the pot...this is very interesting!
