Have you ever taken a moment or two to think how you know what you know? Where did that come from? Did you always just "know"? For all of us, we create our knowledge by experiencing phenomenon that is around us. There is a lot of the natural world around us that we stop and say "Whoa!". How did you learn fire is hot? Probably you got near it, or touched it, or saw someone get burned by it. Or how did you learn how to float in water? We all have to jump in the water and find out ourselves. Maybe we even swallow a little too much water... We create knowledge by learning, arguing, criticizing, and making up stuff. It's all a test to see how far we can go or can't go when dealing with life. We learn quickly what we like and what we don't like around us. Do we create knowledge by only doing good things? No, much of our knowledge is created by our mistakes. We need to train ourselves to not feel bad when we make mistakes. I'm not talking about hurtful mistakes; like when you feel mad at someone so you throw a rock at them. I'm talking about trying new things, thinking new thoughts, not being afraid to put yourself "out there" where you could be embarrassed because you haven't learned yet. Like dancing. Some of us feel too embarrassed to dance...you can't dance until you experience it.... Or play golf... Or ride a horse... Some people don't like to do science because they feel like they are bad at it, or don't like it because they can't do anything right. If we want to create knowledge about the world around us, science is the best place to be. Science is a place you should feel safe to explore and experience phenomenon that has never made sense to you before. If you don't get it this year, does that mean you won't ever get it? Nope! It means you have years ahead of you to create knowledge that will make your life more meaningful. Creating knowledge is an experience nobody wants to miss!

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
