Quick review: Imagine an ecosystem as a tiny world within our world. Here, living things, like plants and animals, interact with non-living elements, including water, rocks, soil and temperature. Every portion of the ecosystem influences everything else. An ecosystem exists within a larger area called a biome.
Change happens in ecosystems all the time. Deserts experience drought and floods, Tropical areas experience fire and stormy winds. Humans can change ecosystems when they build homes and businesses. Ecosystems are delicately balanced. When the balance is broken due to natural or human causes, entire species can be wiped out at once. On the other hand, other species become stronger and survive. The ecosystem can make a recovery after the disaster, but it never goes back to its original system, it adapts to the conditions created by the disaster. This is called ecological succession is when one community of organisms, such as plants or animals, is replaced by another. An example is a forest fire. The fire burns down the species of trees present in the forest and forces out many animal species. The grasses, trees and animals that re-establish themselves in the area may be different than the ones before the fire. In the picture above is a forest in Florida that suffered a fire. What are your observations about how the ecosystem recovered. Does the before fire look the same as after the fire and years of growth?
Change is inevitable for ecosystems...as humans we need to think about the "stress" we put on ecosystems. Can we live among ecosystems without hurting them?

I hate how we cause fires and stuff and some people care but others are just like"who cares". I think that after the fire is not as great as before......it is not a luscious and green but at least growth is happening. :(

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
