Humans have made an impact on many ecosystems as our populations grow. Luckily for us, we like to congregate together in mass, living in cities. Even though we are somewhat self contained to our cities and towns, we still influence other ecosystems outside of our homes and businesses...how is that possible? Scientists and engineers are constantly studying ecosystems to understand how we can preserve them and benefit from their "services". Remember, a healthy ecosystem affects all of us, just like an unhealthy ecosystem can harm us too. We need to be aware of the "footprint" we leave when we visit the forest, or the ocean, our yard, the park, even the old weedy lot in your neighborhood. Take care of the space around you and leave it better than when you visited. If we can provide the best living conditions for all living organisms where ever we go we are doing our part to keep ecosystems healthy. In some neighborhoods they keep light pollution low to help the health of plants and provide less light for nocturnal animals to live their lives in their natural light. Some people build bat boxes, bird houses, butterfly houses, hang bird feeders, squirrel feeders, keep yards clean of trash so that any critters that use your yard as part of their ecosystem will have protection to do what they do best. Be aware of the creatures in your neighborhood, watch out for them and take care of them. We are the ones that moved in and changed their ecosystem. Let's be the humans that make ecosystems healthy for all.

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
