Neutrons...they hang out with protons in the nucleus of an atom, they are neutral, having no charge...how boring! Kind of reminds me of my older sister, always there, never says anything, never does anything. No matter how much I bother her, she just stares at me like I'm a piece of dust on the floor.... Why does the nucleus of an atom need a neutron? Does it do anything? Neutrons stabilize the protons in the nucleus. If the neutrons weren't inside the nucleus the protons would repel each other and break up the inside of the atom! And I've heard that neutrons if left alone are very unstable and will decay into a hydrogen atom!! Neutrons have a mass, it's a little heavier than a proton which = 1. Actually the mass of the neutron is 1.674927471×10−27 kg (or 0.00000000000000000000000000164927471 kg). An atom nucleus cannot be made of only neutrons, there has to be at least one proton. With one proton that makes heavy hydrogen... Neutrons are beginning to grow on me, I'm thinking I like those little neutral particles. A quick review of neutrons: They stick with protons to stabilize the nucleus of an atom, they have zero charge so they can sneak in and out of a nucleus if they want to, but if too many sneak out the nucleus becomes unstable. The number of neutrons in the nucleus does not affect the chemical make up of the atom. And neutrons play a key role in nuclear power production. Neutrons sound like the boss!

That kitty is so cute! I didn't know that Neutrons were heavier than Protons. That is crazy

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
