Inside the atom is a group of particles that are smaller than the atom. The positive particle is called the proton. What's so special about a proton? The Greek meaning for proton is "first". The existence of a proton was theorized by William Prout in 1815. The smallest atom is the hydrogen atom, it has 1 proton inside. The mass of a proton is "1" and the positive charge is "+1". Hydrogen is the most plentiful atom in our Universe. The most plentiful atom in the human body is hydrogen and oxygen....H2O is water. 60% of our bodies are made up of water. How much hydrogen is on the Earth? Nobody has calculated this, but I bet it is a number that wouldn't fit in this blog or even the internet.... The Sun is fusing hydrogen by the second...how can such a plentiful element be so small, so simple and so significant? Positive protons and negative electrons attract holding the nucleus of the atom together. Water is the most important atom of our existence. How can something so simple be so important? When you add a proton to an element, like hydrogen it becomes helium. Add a proton to helium and it becomes lithium. The proton determines what an element is.
The proton of an atom is very important holding the nucleus together, holding the Sun together, holding our Earth together, holding our bodies together....

I thought atoms were the smallest thing in the universe, but protons are even smaller?
