Soon...next week...we will start our study of microorganisms. We have been to the edge of the universe and back, so now we turn our sights to the smallest organisms on the planet. A microorganism or microbe is an organism that is so small that it is microscopic (invisible to the naked eye). Microorganisms are often illustrated using single-celled, or unicellular organisms; however, some unicellular protists are visible to the naked eye, and some multi-cellular species are microscopic. Most microorganisms can only be seen by high powered microscopes. These bacteria have cilia covering their bodies so they can travel. Most people have more bacteria on their bodies and in their bodies than can be counted... These little critters are called paramecia and I'm hoping we can find some in water samples you will be taking from water or puddles around your home. These are the "Big Four" that we will be reading about, looking through microscopes to find and trying to figure out their purpose on earth. What would we do without these "icky" looking organisms? We would die. We need them as much as we need air.
Don't worry, some are really cute!!

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
