Imagine for a minute that we lived in a "Bird Box" (Netflix) world. How would we do science? Well, never fear, I know exactly what activity we would do. We would create models of the planets with our blind folds on and using our fingertips!! Wouldn't that be awesome?? No really, think of the possibilities! We already have a really good idea of their sizes so we just need to pick objects that we know, like sports balls, gumballs, or fruit! We just need to think things through.... First we need to identify the pattern of the planets. I know some people think there isn't a pattern, but there really is... We know how large the sun is, but that's a star, not a planet. We want to start with Mercury and model all the way to Neptune, alright, maybe Pluto because then you can see a cool contrast between the gas planets and a small rocky "dwarf planet". Why do we care what the sizes and patterns of the planets are? Because #1: Planets are SO COOL! #2: Knowing about an objects' differences compared with other things helps us learn more about that object. And #3: It's hands on and we don't have to keep notes and watch videos to learn something! We can learn about it using our hands and minds. After we have finished our planet models, we would study why we used stuff that we recognize and know, like sports ball, gumballs and fruit. Our minds form questions and then we can do investigations, like experiments and learn more. Those scientists at NASA? All of them love asking questions and trying to answer their questions using models. Do they know what they are doing? Well, now they do, but in the beginning NO! They were like the people in "Bird Box" (Netflix). Scientists were going into their experiments "blind", making mistakes and trying to solve their questions using the little that they knew. Until, by "trial and error" we have the knowledge of today. Is that knowledge perfect? Of course not! But humans have made great progress understanding our solar system using models. The audience in the picture above is waiting to watch the first nuclear tests done, igniting a bomb over the ocean. Do they look prepared for the results??? I'm pretty sure they were scared to death by the power of the bomb scientists had invented. Look at this model of the Planets using fruit to compare sizes. Do you like it? Do you think it's accurate? Think about this and when you start your model, following directions, will your model look how you expect it to. If it doesn't...what will you do? You got this!

I love this. I like how it compared the fruits with the planets. I love learning about the planet even though I might not know a lot about them.

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
