An occluded front is a combination of two fronts that form when a cold front catches up and overtakes a warm front. Really? That's it? Sometimes a cold front follows right behind a warm front. A warm air mass pushes into a colder air mass (the warm front) and then another cold air mass pushes into the warm air mass (the cold front). Because cold fronts move faster, the cold front is likely to overtake the warm front. This is known as an occluded front. At an occluded front, the cold air mass from the cold front meets the cool air that was ahead of the warm front. The warm air rises as these air masses come together. Occluded fronts usually form around areas of low atmospheric pressure. (Remember: Air masses flow from High to Low...) This looks like a game of tag! The colder air is chasing the warmer air, it catches up to it and the warm air cries because it got tagged! Well, cry me a river! What kind of weather happens at the occluded front? Before the front passes, there will be rain, sometimes heavy. While the occluded front passes over you the rain is moderate to heavy showers. When the occluded front passes the precipitation decreases becoming very light and then the clouds clear away. If the front is a warm occluded front the temperatures will rise. Yep, better wear your rain boots, and bring an umbrella....
