We know that ocean currents move all across the planet. Warmer water can be found near the Equator where the sunlight is direct. At the poles the water is colder, denser and helps create a current that pushes water all over so that cold water can warm and warm waters can cool. How does this affect our climate? Well, warm waters create warm air, and that air is carried different directions by the winds...how many of you have flown from Salt Lake City to Hawaii, or South America, or Australia? It's warmer there and the ocean currents have something to do with that. Warm waters=warm winds=warm land masses. The majority of the Sun's energy is absorbed by the oceans. You could even think of the waters bordered by the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn as "solar panels". The heat is captured in the water and the molecules are either heated and excited into evaporating or carried by warm currents of water somewhere else. Climate is affected by ocean waters even 100's of miles away. Ocean water is constantly evaporation and condensation is creating clouds of moisture that are carried by the winds. Ocean currents are like a conveyor belt that transports water molecules that are constantly evaporating, condensing, and precipitating all over the planet! If we want to live where it's cold, all we have to do is look at the ocean currents. If you want cold get away from the tropics, going north or south on the globe. The waters cool, the air gets dryer and there are more violent storms at certain seasons of the year. At the poles, the weather is nearly the same...cold, colder and coldest! The big question is...if climate is changing what is causing it? Humans? Ocean currents? Sun's energy? That's the big argument, who do we blame climate change on?

I agree with you Alice, all those experiments were really fun. My favorite was the red, green, and clear water one.

Why are the temperatures so different in different places? Also, why are the different temperatures so close to one another? I'm pretty sure that is why we get water cyclones and hurricanes. That sure makes a whole lot more sense now that I think about it. By the way, Alice I totally agree with you about the experiments. Those are so much fun. Mrs. Taylor comes up with all sorts of cool and fun activities for us to learn and have fun at the same time. On Monday I was so eager to get to class, but we ended up getting home at 6pm. That made me so sad. I also think it's cool that so many different water temperatures can combine and form a storm from rapid temperature change.

I never thought of the waters by the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn as solar panels. That is very fascinating.

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
