Camouflage is another example of an adaption that helps an animal to survive in its environment. Animals use camouflage to avoid detection by both predator and prey species. We learned about the mimic octopus today. This species has scientists wondering how many shapes and forms can it make? Another master of camouflage is the chameleon. I always wanted to have one of these for a pet...Native mostly to Madagascar and sub-Saharan Africa, chameleons are some of the most unique-looking animals on earth. From their hooded heads to their strangely shaped feet, chameleons possess a host of physical adaptations which have developed to help them survive. Some of these adaptations help the chameleon hunt, while others enable it to hide from predators. Hedgehogs are found on several continents throughout the globe. These spiny animals have adapted to their environment by developing several defense mechanisms and a heightened sense of smell to detect food. Using these adaptations, hedgehogs can survive in a myriad of conditions. Sharp spines cover the back of the hedgehog. If a hedgehog does not feel threatened, the spines angle in a way that allows the hedgehog to be touched. When a hedgehog enters a state of panic or needs defense, the hedgehog curls itself into a ball and extends its spines vertically for protection. These spines cannot be released from the hedgehog in an offensive attack but rather act as a defense mechanism against predators in the wild. Physical adaptations include parts of the body. Have you taken the time to notice how many different bird beaks there are? Or appendages? Physical adaptations will help animals survive. We don't totally understand how these adaptations came about or why certain animals have chosen to use them. It all makes very interesting conversation at the dinner table....
