Remember that a resource is a substance or object in the environment an organism absolutely needs for normal growth, maintenance, and creating more organisms like itself. Resources can be consumed by one organism and, as a result, become unavailable to another organism. Food is important for organisms to survive. If another organism comes into the community and eats all the food another organism needs, that organism will die or need to move to another ecosystem. It's really not a laughing matter...how many of you go boating in Utah? Idaho? California? If you take your boat to different lakes in different states you must stop and have your boat inspected because they are looking for organisms that will take over a water way, completely. That culprit is the zebra mussel. Zebra mussels are fresh water organisms that multiply very quickly and clog up everything, eat up everything and are a complete nuisance to an ecosystem. This shopping cart was found in a lake. Covered in zebra mussels. These little zebra mussels attack anything and attach themselves to boats, trash, anywhere they can park and eat, eat, eat! There are lots of invaders in ecosystems, even grasses. Pampas grass is taking over and killing out many native species as it grows and grows taking up all the space. Invasive species have to be controlled or they will take all the food from smaller organisms. Can you think of some invasive species? Any species that is not native to an area can soon consume many of the resources needed by the original plants and animals. This is why predators are good for an ecosystem. Balance can happen when there is something bigger that develops a taste for the invaders. Food is important to all organisms in a community.
