The process of inferring something happens to us more than we realize. I want to give you some examples of making inferences, and they don't necessarily have to be scientific. Inferring is a process our brain goes through to help us conclude something is true. Most times we make correct inferences and sometimes we don't...
It is possible to make a bad inference. This all depends on what kind of PROOF you have to back up your idea or opinion. What if you walked up to a group of friends and caught the end of this conversation: "...all cowboys are hicks!" What would you picture in your brain? This? Or this... It is possible that what you heard is true...but you might have missed the whole truth of the conversation. For a Dallas Cowboys fan, those would be fighting words and could steer the conversation a whole new direction, or if you are a cowboy and darn proud of it, those words could hurt someone. The moral of the story is: be careful when making inferences because you need to back up what you believe with some kind of proof. It's always a good idea to do some research before claiming something that you might not understand completely. In this "age of information" we live in, inferences are very important in the science and technology world. Truth is out there, we just need to keep looking for it.
