Did you know that everything makes shadows? I bet you are wondering..."What could be interesting about a shadow?".... A shadow follows you wherever you go, it's that dark shape that blocks light. The source of light could be the sun, or a lamp, or a campfire. The Earth can make a shadow on the moon and the moon can make a shadow on Earth. You can make shadow figures with your hands against a wall... Okay! You are wondering where I'm going with this! The length of a shadow changes as the Earth revolves around the Sun! There! I said it! The shadows are longest at sunset, have you ever noticed? And this time of day it doesn't matter what the season, the angle of sunlight causes long shadows. But, if you notice a long shadow and it's in the winter and it's noon, then these long shadows are caused by the season. In the winter the sun is lower in the sky, kind of like how the sun gets lower when it sets, except during the seasons, the sun is really lower or higher in the sky. You can measure your shadow between fall and spring and watch the difference over time. You would discover that during that period of time, the Earth is revolving, the tilt of the Earth is causing the light to hit you at different angles and changing the shape of your shadow. This is a cute little gif to help you see the different shadows during the seasons. Finger shadows are still more fun... Ancient scientists were curious about shadows, that's where we get the sun dial, which was the first way humans started keeping track of time. I bet everyone wanted one of those! So you see the Seasons are more than just summer, winter, fall and spring. It's all about the tilt, shadows, and angles of sunlight. So fascinating, don't you agree?

I think that it is cool that ancient scientists could even figure out the time back then, it seems hard without the technology we have today.

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
