Space is huge, I mean really HUGE! Why do we as humans try and put our Solar System to scale? Can we learn anything from this? First we can learn the sequence of the planets, that's important. We should know that Earth is the third planet from the Sun... And it's probably a good idea for us to know the relative sizes or circumferences of the planets. Humans like to make comparisons all the time! For example comparing the size of Video Game Monsters is very important...it could mean life or death.... We compare foods and drinks.... We are always comparing ourselves, how much money we have, how little money we have, the kind of cars we drive, or don't drive, the color of our hair, the amount of points we have, our grades...I think humans have to compare everything or they aren't happy! So why not compare planets? When we make models we can use them to see and understand things we cannot see. When we can accurately visualize or model the solar system, we are better able to understand how it works, make predictions, and ask questions about it. What if our Sun wasn't the middle of the Solar System? What would happen? Make a model and see. Scientists use models to try and "see" what their ideas will look like in motion, or on paper. I think models are pretty useful and fun to make. But, they do create lots of questions, like "how big is the Solar System in miles?" or "how big is the Sun compared to Earth?" or "what is the farthest object in the Solar System?". All these questions lead to making more models! Really? Wasn't the first airplane a model? The first rocket? The first telephone? See what I mean? Humans love to model their ideas and see if they work. Models are "where it's at", models are the "rage", models equal increased knowledge and understanding of our world and the space around us.

I think that it is true. Humans are always comparing what they have and don't have with other people. That is why people aren't happy all the time.

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
