Not llama! Analemma! What? You haven't heard of the analemma? If you were to plot the noontime position of the Sun over a period of time, like fall to the next fall, you would see that the Sun makes a figure 8 in the sky. This shape results from the combination of two things: the 23.5° tilt of Earth on its spin axis, and the elliptical shape of Earth's orbit around the Sun. Weird, but true. Look at these real photos of this phenomenon: How did these photographers do this? They set up their tripods and cameras in the exact same place everyday for a year at noon and took a picture of the sun. Yes, they had to use a filter or they would burn their eyes and ruin their cameras. But the phenomenon is still fascinating! The highest point on the analemma is the Sun's noon position on the summer solstice. The lowest point marks the winter solstice. The difference in the Sun's noontime height in the sky is caused by Earth's tilted axis. What about the left-to-right variation in the analemma's curve? That's caused by Earth's elliptical orbit. Who can say "analemma"?

Depending on how you pronounce Analemma it might sound more like llama than I thought.

I like how you told us how the photographers took the pictures. I also think that it's cool how the sun creates a figure eight. It's cool how the conclusion all ends at the angle of the Sun's rays, and Earth's tilt.

So, how do the cameras brake by facing the sun too much?
