Climate happens over a long period of time, like years and years, decades, eons! That's why climate and weather are different, weather happens everyday. What system is in charge of our climate? I mean who says the top half of Africa has to be dry for thousands of years, and South America gets to be green for thousands of years? Who is in charge!! It's all the Sun! If we didn't have the Sun, we wouldn't have to worry about all this stuff...the Sun powers all the heat energy in our Solar System, our little Earth either absorbs the heat or reflects the heat. Remember why we have seasons? Yep, the Earth is tilted on its axis, and the rays of the sun are directly on the equator and indirectly on the poles. "Differential heating" is what its called. Not all of the Earth is getting the same amount of sunshine. Another system that could control our climate is the ocean, or should I say oceans. They cover about 71% of the whole planet and hold 96.5% of all the water on the Earth! The oceans could be a big reason we have climates. Ocean's can hold more heat and absorb more heat than the land masses and our atmosphere. Truly, water is an amazing molecule! Water is able to absorb heat, without increasing much in temperature, better than many substances. This is because for water to increase in temperature, water molecules must be made to move faster within the water; this requires breaking hydrogen bonds, and the breaking of hydrogen bonds absorbs heat. Oceans are amazing, on the surface and underneath. We will learn more about the ocean and its different densities soon!

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
