The Periodic table is probably one of the best tools in science. Keith Enevoldsen has even created an interactive periodic table that allows you to click on an element and it gives you lots of cool information about what the element is used for. Put this link in your browser and I promise you will have about 5 minutes of fun! https://elements.wlonk.com/ElementsTable.htm (5 minutes because I know Fortnite is way more fun....) The Periodic table has helped scientists predict elements and create their own elements. Dmitri Mendeleev, a Russian scientist, was the man who organized the elements that he knew about in his day. His table was organized by atomic mass, so it looked a bit different than our Periodic Table today. The importance of his efforts was that he recognized patterns in the elements and by organizing these patterns he has helped us today by leaps and bounds to know the properties of atoms. Mendeleev's table had gaps in them, which he didn't mind at all, he figured they were elements that hadn't been discovered yet. He was absolutely right! We are humans so preoccupied with the elements? Because...WE ARE THE ELEMENTS! Everything that we can do, see, smell, taste, grow, touch, build...all ELEMENTS. Living organisms contain relatively large amounts of oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur along with sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium, chlorine, and phosphorus. Chances are at some point in your life you will need to study the Periodic Table. I hope that you will come to like it like a friend, something to help you be better in life. (Or at least have more fun in life...yeah, way more fun than playing Fortnite!!)

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
