Every sound we hear, every photon of light that hits our eyes, the movement of grass blown by the wind and the regular beat of the tides are all examples of waves. They are all around us. Visible, physical waves such as those we see when a rock is thrown into water are what many people think about when they first began to think about waves. At the simplest level, waves are a disturbances that carry energy through a medium. (KEY CONCEPT): Particles move as the waves pass through but there is no net motion of particles. This means, once a wave has passed the particles return to their original position. As a result, energy, not matter, is carried by waves. Think surfing.... In this picture there are some surfers that are riding the wave and there are some surfers that are waiting for the wave to pass. The wave will lift the surfers waiting, but they won't be carried towards shore on the wave. The wave will pass underneath them. The surfer does not move, but the energy of the wave proceeds toward shore. See how these surfers are waiting. They bob up and down as the waves pass beneath them. First type of wave: Longitudinal wave Sound waves are longitudinal. They travel parallel to the motion of the energy. There are points of compression when the waves are bunched up and there are areas of rarefaction when the waves are stretched apart creating cycles of wavelengths. These waves move the fastest and energy is transferred but matter does not. If there were a surfer riding this wave, he could let the wave pass underneath him and he would stay in the same spot. Second type of wave: Shear-Transverse Waves Movement of the particles are at right angles (perpendicular) to the motion of the energy. Movement of a wave through a solid object like a stretched rope or a trampoline is an example of this type of wave. These waves can travel through solids and move slower. Earthquakes create transverse waves that can travel through solid rock. Third type of wave: Surface waves Surface waves are ocean waves. They are created by winds and other disturbances on the surface of the water. Look at the key concept: Energy is being moved forward, but particles of matter stay in place. There is another wave we have already studied and that is the Electromagnetic wave: this energy can pass through a vacuum where there isn't any matter at all. OH! And there is the good bye wave....
