The sun is what makes the water cycle work. The sun provides what almost everything on Earth needs to go—energy, or heat. Heat causes liquid and frozen water to evaporate into water vapor gas, which rises high in the sky to form clouds...clouds that move over the globe and drop rain and snow. What if there was no Sun in the water cycle? Frozen planet! Duh! There would be no water cycle! What would happen if there wasn't any gravity in the Water Cycle?? Water wouldn't run down mountains or fall from the clouds as precipitation. Without gravity there wouldn't be a Water Cycle.
On Earth water exists as a solid, a liquid and a gas. The whole Water Cycle is driven by the energy of the Sun...gravity is the mover, transporter of each phase of water on Earth. While sunlight is the energy source, the greatest force propelling the water cycle is gravity. Gravity is the force of attraction between two objects, and Earth’s gravity pulls matter downward, toward its center. It pulls precipitation down from clouds and pulls water downhill. Gravity also moves air and ocean water. Cool, dry air is more dense than warm, humid air, and cool, salty water is more dense than warm, less salty water. Gravity pulls denser air and water downward, forcing less dense air and water to move upward. The warm water near the surface of the ocean heats up with sunlight and evaporates, keeping the water cycle in motion.

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
