From the point of view of an Earthling, outer space is a zone that occurs about (60 miles) above the planet, where there is no air (maybe a teeny amount) to breathe or to scatter light. In that area, blue gives way to black because oxygen molecules are so few they can't make the sky blue. Further, space is a vacuum, meaning that sound cannot carry because molecules are not close enough together to transmit sound between them. That's not to say that space is empty, however. Gas, dust and other bits of matter float around "emptier" areas of the universe, while more crowded regions can host planets, stars and galaxies. No one knows exactly how big space is. The difficulty is because of what we can only see as far as our best telescopes. We measure long distances in space in "light-years," representing the distance it takes for light to travel in a year (roughly 5.8 trillion miles, or 9.3 trillion kilometers). From light that is visible in our telescopes, astronomers have mapped galaxies reaching almost as far back as the Big Bang, which is thought to have started our universe 14 billion years ago. This means we can "see" into space at a distance of almost 14 billion light-years. However, astronomers are not sure if our universe is the only universe that exists. This means that space could be a lot bigger than it appears to us. So many questions... what does space look like? Can we feel space? Can you taste it? I don't know some people may want to know? Like, what does it look like from orbit? Well, it appears that space looks like space from whatever angle you look at it. I guess, space is...space...lots of it....

I wonder how big space really is, and if there is another universe that we don't know about.

when you think about it, we are just a tiny dot in the universe compared to everything else

An object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by another force.so IF this applies to science THEN wouldn't it mean space goes on forever IF not THEN what would the force be. Gravity maybe.

These are so cool! I love the ones that show the stars. I wonder how far space stretches........wow that makes my brain hurt. We think we're so big when there could be huge things living out there. They wouldn't notice us because our whole galaxy is just a spec of their " air ". CAN YOU IMAGINE? .........and sigh of relief that through all of space, we LIVE!

Mrs. TaylorI love science! Everything about the world is interesting and never boring. I love to study plants, animals, insects, and people. My favorite subjects are my students who are the most unique organisms on the planet! Categories |
